A recovered alcoholic who helps others in deepening their recovery with the Twelve Steps

Dear Friend,

If you would like true freedom from your own personal addiction, then you need to read this.

Because you're about to discover a path through the Twelve Steps specifically designed to bring you this freedom.

What is true freedom?

Never spending any time thinking about the obsession of your addiction

Where you're not constantly struggling with the obsessive thinking and compulsive desire to drink, or drug, or act out.

Because if my recovery as an alcoholic leaves me thinking about "not drinking" – then I still have the alcoholic mind – I'm still wrapped up around alcohol.

I haven't recovered...

“Sometimes We Hear an Alcoholic Say that the
Only Thing He Needs to Do is to Keep Sober”

  • Why isn’t this enough?
  • Why isn’t it sufficient to simply not drink or use?

Because not using or drinking leaves us at the level of the problem. It's a good start…

... but the failure to take on a lifetime practice of the Twelve Steps and work out the principles of recovery in all aspects of life is the ongoing threat to your sobriety.

Here's an example from late in my drinking career:

I drank myself into a blackout during the first of two weddings.

The results were embarrassing for me personally... and I desperately wanted to avoid repeating the experience a month later at a second wedding – so I didn't drink.

If you're an alcoholic or addict, then you understand what I'm talking about... I spent the entire wedding "not drinking."

I was not free of the obsession or compulsion...

... it was all over me.

That second wedding is a picture to me of what Twelve Step recovery is NOT.

Because if your recovery is all about "not drinking" or "not drugging" or "not engaging in the addictive behavior" - then you're still in it.

You're still at the level of the problem.

You haven't gotten free...

The Twelve Step Path Does Not Leave You
"Clinging by Your Fingernails" to Sobriety

As the Twelve and Twelve says:

“A.A.’s Twelve Steps are a group of principles, spiritual in their nature, which, if practiced as a way of life, can expel the obsession to drink and enable the sufferer to become happily and usefully whole.”

... you're free of the obsession.

... you're not thinking of it all the time.

... it's gone.

How do you get this freedom?

Starting into recovery you would think the result of working the Steps is sobriety – sobriety from the drink, or the drug, or the addictive behavior.

It's not.

How come?

Because you're powerless over your addiction.

What you can get is a spiritual awakening...

... as you deepen into the Twelve Steps.

To "broaden and deepen our understanding" as the Twelve and Twelve says.

Where we're practicing those principles of the Steps as a way of life... (resulting in freedom from the obsession of your addiction).

The Twelve Step Program Has All the Integrity
of Any Other Spiritual Path

This one works...

... and as you're pursuing the path to this spiritual awakening – you're also staying sober day after day.

... but you're not staying sober as a result of "not drinking" like I was in that second wedding.

... you're staying sober as you take on the work that leads you to a spiritual awakening.

Day after day is going by and you're not drinking, or drugging, or engaging in the addictive behavior...

... and the realization begins to dawn on you that you're free of the obsession.

Days are going by and you're not thinking about it.

You're not thinking about it at all...

I Spent Some Time in the A.A. Literature
Wanting to Understand this:

  • Why did I drink the way I drank?
  • How had the Twelve Step program worked to free me from this obsession?

As I began to get some insight into this I wrote a book called The Spirituality of Sobriety: Finding the Spiritual Awakening in the Recovery from Alcoholism.

Because it is the spiritual awakening that allows the addict to become free...

... and to live that way!

The Spirituality of Sobriety was warmly received, reviewed, and recommended by treatment professionals - as well as the recovery community.

And the book quickly became the basis for...

My Professional Workshops and
Recovery Retreats:

  • At the Wilson House – I'm a regular presenter where Bill Wilson grew up.
  • For the Anonymous Foundation – I did a series of workshops in New York.
  • For the Matt Talbot Movement – I regularly lead retreats up and down the East Coast.
  • In Rehabs – I put on workshops for the professional community that works with alcoholics and addicts.

After all this work over the years I found that people would come to workshops again with me... and finally begin to understand how this works in their lives.

So I began thinking... "how can I bring this information to more people?"

That's what got me started in this endeavor to create an "online recovery system" and I've made the lessons as easy as possible to apply in your own life by combining written lessons with video learning.

Now you can experience the same benefits as those who join with me in workshops and recovery retreats:

  • Bring internal change to yourself first! (Allow everything around you to hold steady and seek change from within as you're led through the actual work of the Twelve Steps.)
  • Your "thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane." Instead of thinking of your mind as a "bad neighborhood to be in," you now find it to be "more and more on the plane of inspiration."
  • You remain clean and sober — not by resisting your addiction — but by practicing the Twelve Steps in the specific way you're about to discover by following this online "framework for your recovery."
  • "Become able to do, feel, and believe that which [you] could not do before.” (You actually feel different by finding the “emotional balance” and “emotional sobriety” promised at the Eleventh and Twelfth Steps.)
  • And then the ultimate promise you begin to “react sanely and normally” to your addiction with a “new attitude” that seems to come “without any thought or effort on our part.” The experience of true freedom.

If you’re ready to begin the work laid out in the Twelve Steps that for millions of people has provided freedom from various addictions, then you are ready to...
